Monsoon season in southern Arizona runs from mid-June to the end of September. The storms can be spectacular to watch from the porch, but they also bring blowing dust, lightning, flash floods and the odd power cut. A little preparation in May makes the whole season easier.
1. Check your alarms
Lightning strikes and power surges can damage wiring. A smoke and carbon monoxide alarm in the hallway and near bedrooms gives you clear warning, and a Ting electrical fire sensor keeps an eye on your wiring and alerts your phone if it spots trouble.
2. Keep a fire blanket in the kitchen
When the power flickers, people cook by candlelight or fire up the grill. Hang a Prepared Hero fire blanket on a wall hook where you can grab it without reaching past the stove.
3. Ready the car
Never drive into a flooded wash. If you do get stuck waiting out a storm, a roadside emergency kit with cables, a flashlight and reflective gear helps a lot. Add a gallon of water and a phone charger.
4. Clean up after the dust
Haboobs leave fine dust on every surface. Swap in a fresh vacuum filter so your machine keeps pulling well, and use an electric spin scrubber on patio pavers and windowsills.
